Neurological disorders

A neurological disorder occurs when an individual experiences damage to their nervous system. The nervous system is made up of the brain, nerves throughout the body and the spinal cord. The damage that occurs with a neurological disorder can be caused by strokes, head injury or dementia. Neurological disorders can affect an individual's ability to understand and express language, communicate and swallow safely and efficiently. Speech and language therapy can help an individual with a neurological disorder with any speech, language, communication or swallowing difficulties they may have.

Speech disorders

A speech disorder is where an individual finds producing speech sounds challenging. Speech disorders can include difficulties with articulation or phonology. The child may have a either a cleft lip or palate on its own, or a cleft lip and palate together. A child with a cleft lip and palate may experience difficulties with their speech, communication or swallowing. Voice disorders

Voice disorders affect a child's ability to use their voice effectively. The pitch, quality or volume of a child's voice with a voice disorder may have changed. Speech and language impairment

Speech and language impairment is a broad term which describes when a child is experiencing difficulties with their language development. Speech and language impairments include language delay or language disorder. Language delay can be defined as when a child develops their language in the correct patterns, however at a slow pace. Language disorder is when the child develops their language in a different order, and therefore mimics a younger child's language.

Glue ear

Glue ear is where a child experiences difficulty with their hearing. Glue ear occurs when a build-up of fluid occurs in the child's middle ear. This build-up of fluid prevents sound being transmitted properly. Glue ear causes a reduced ability with the child's hearing, which can then impact their speech, language and communication development. Bilingualism

Bilingualism is where a child acquires communicative skills in more than one language.
